Native American Artist Appearance & Trunk Show
A trunk show of jewelry created by acclaimed Native American
artist Lillian Pitt. Wearable works of art starting at $38, are
inspired by the Museum’s Native American artifacts, 2
p.m. Pitt talks about her work, in the current Art through
Ancestry exhibit at 3 p.m.

Masters of the Night: The True Story of Bats
Sensory interactive displays. Discover bats’ ecological
importance,
maneuver a bat model with a joystick and use laser-simulated
sonar to
hunt like a bat.

Corn Husk Bag Weaving Workshop
Create Native American basketry with artist Kelli Palmer, of
the
Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Make a miniature corn husk
bag suitable for a necklace. Bring lunch or purchase it at the

Americana music, live! Kids, choose from an array of rhythm
instruments, and play along with the band. 10 am-3 pm
Mustang Celebration and Adoption
Join us for a celebration of a Western icon – the
mustang.
10 am-2 pm: Trainers show off wild mustangs and answer
questions.
11-11:45 am: Learn about the horse and its family tree in a
talk
with a John Day Fossil Beds National Monument ranger, and
examine fossils.
12-12:45 pm: Gary McFadden, Bureau of Land Management Wild
Horse and Burro expert, talks about the history and current
issues
surrounding wild horses and burros in the West.
Examine horse fossils.
2:30 pm: Silent Bid Mustang Adoption

Join the miners heading for the High Desert’s latest
mining strike
in the 1870s. Join Living History characters and try your hand
at
panning for gold with authentic equipment of the times.

September 30 KOHD Wild Wednesdays kickoff
Visitors ages 7 to 12 and their parents will discover obscure
parts of
the Museum on weekly scavenger hunts. Use an adventure map
to
find all the hidden treasure chests and get a Museum prize.
Themes
of the hunt change each month. Watch KOHD-TV for the word
of the week and receive an additional prize! Check

October 5 ODS Senior Free Day
Seniors age 65 or older are invited to enjoy the Museum for
free, with special wildlife encounters, Living History
performances and animal keeper talks. Presented by ODS and

Oregon Sesquicentennial Author Series
Vivian Adams, of the Yakama tribe, presents the story behind
the story – a Native perspective
on the By Hand Through Memory exhibit and signs the book,
Native Arts of the Columbia
Plateau, and talks about her work on the American Girl series
with the book Kaya. 1:30 pm

See cool experiments related to High Desert obsidian glass
formation, lava flows, and volcanic
eruptions. Don lab coats and goggles and do fun materials
science activities. Make fun, amazing
stuff like ooblek and slime. Crack a geode and take it home! 11

Live from 1860: it’s the Civil War. The sagebrush
soldiers return west, muskets blazing.
Experience life in the 1860s through Living History with

See our meat-eating animals enjoy special treats and other
activities in a special Halloween celebration throughout the

Fair
Artisans display Native American and locally crafted art and
jewelry, photography, local gourd artistry, embroidery,
knitting, candles, dried floral arrangements and wreaths made
of pinecones and other natural materials.

Oregon Sesquicentennial Author Series
Author Crystal Sands presents highlights from The
Children’s Travel Guide to Bend. She signs this updated
release offering more great ways for families to explore the
