We the People: The Democratic Process in the High Desert
How does democracy show up in our lives? How divided are we and what does that mean for the democratic process? What are our responsibilities within a democratic society? Over four events, you will explore a range of perspectives on these questions and share your own thoughts and experiences. This exciting journey into the complexity of the democratic process will help build understanding across divides and explore our own values.
Event #1: What does democracy mean?

What does democracy mean to you, to our community, and to our country? And how does it show up in our lives? Join Sarah Henderson, Associate Professor of Political Science at Oregon State University, in an interactive discussion about what democracy means and how the democratic process functions. Dinner is included.
Event #3: What do we owe each other?
Friday, October 18 at 8:00 am (full day event)
Join us on a field trip to Harney County to explore how the democratic process works and our responsibilities within this process. We will meet with Rep. Mark Owens and the High Desert Partnership to explore how people are working within and outside of political systems to address challenges and opportunities in the region. Lunch is included.
Event #2: How divided are we and what does that mean for our democratic process?
Thursday, October 10 at 5:30 pm
John Horvick, Senior Vice President with DHM Research, will share poll data around where Oregonians stand on important issues, and Jasmine Ramsey with Beyond Conflict will discuss the science behind how we mentally and physically respond to polarization. This research will drive an engaging discussion around divides and our responses to them. Dinner is included.
Event #4: What does democracy look like?
Saturday, October 26 at 12:00 pm
What can we learn from the symbols and metaphors historical and contemporary artists use to depict the democratic process? How have these depictions changed over time, and what do they tell us about our shifting view of democracy and democratic institutions? Join artist, educator and curator Andries Fourie for an illustrated talk about depictions of democracy in art and visual culture followed by a hands-on opportunity to participate in the making of a collaborative artwork. Lunch is included.
