About us

Since opening in 1982, HIGH DESERT MUSEUM has brought together wildlife, culture, art and natural resources to promote an understanding of the natural and cultural heritage of North America’s High Desert country. We do so through indoor and outdoor exhibits, wildlife in natural habitats, living history demonstrations and dynamic programs on a beautiful, 135-acre campus in the pine forest. The Museum is a nonprofit organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, is a Smithsonian Affiliate, was the 2019 recipient of the Western Museums Association’s Charles Redd Award for Exhibition Excellence and was awarded the 2021 National Medal for Museum and Library Services. During the 2018-19 fiscal year, 195,000 visitors enjoyed the Museum.

The Museum is located in Bend, Oregon, a fast-growing, charismatic city nestled against the Cascade Range at the edge of the High Desert. We strive to be inclusive, culturally humble, relevant, curious, and mindful. As a team, we work together to wildly excite and responsibly teach, creating connection to and dialogue about the High Desert.

About this job and what you’ll do

The Payroll & HR Specialist is responsible for payroll management, benefit administration, employee/volunteer onboarding, safety coordination, and general HR administration.  Once an employee is hired, you’ll ensure they are set up in our employee database and ready for their first day.  Then you’re responsible for getting them paid correctly and helping them manage their paid leave and other benefits.  During the year, you’ll lead our annual medical benefit enrollment, coordinate safety meetings, plan compliance trainings, and assist employees with special situations such as worker compensation claims or other benefit-related questions.  On a regular basis, you’ll maintain employee files and deal with the paperwork related to human resources administration.

About who you are

The Payroll & HR Specialist is a detail-oriented person.  You understand payroll compliance and related labor law issues, and you know how to research a topic if you need more information.  Spending quality time with an Excel spreadsheet is your idea of a fun workday afternoon and keeping a database clean just makes sense to you.  You are experienced in being responsible for payroll processing and perhaps you’ve been involved with HR administration.  With all these analytical and process-based skills, you’re also able to maintain excellent relationships with your colleagues by providing help with their payroll and benefit needs.  Ideally you have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, but some college courses in business or accounting combined with the right experiences is another way to attain the skill sets you’ll need to thrive in this role.
