Desert Sage Society Reception –Frank S. Matsura: Portraits from the Borderland Opening Evening

Please join Executive Director Dana Whitelaw, Ph.D., and the Board of Trustees of the High Desert Museum for an exclusive donor event.

Frank S. Matsura: Portraits from the Borderland explores the representation of Indigenous communities through detailed photography by Japanese immigrant and photographer Frank Sakae Matsura (1873–1913). Known for his collaborative and nuanced portraits, Matsura documented the lives of Indigenous Plateau communities with a depth and sensitivity rarely seen in his time. His work offers a visually potent and intimate perspective, highlighting the strength, adaptability and cultural vibrancy of Plateau communities during a time of transformation. This exhibition pairs large-scale images with cultural objects that bring the era to life.

You are invited to a private reception to preview this new exhibition and hear from Michael Holloman (Colville Confederated Tribes), associate professor of art history at Washington State University, about Matsura’s life and the people he photographed.
