Portraits of Us: Stories of Identity and Representation in the American West
Join us for a thought-provoking exploration into how we define ourselves, how identity influences our interactions with the world, and how we present ourselves in different social contexts. Through art, history, and discussion, this series invites you to examine the complexities of identity in the American West and beyond.
Event #1: Changing American West Identity
Wednesday, March 12 at 5:30 pm
Join Patricia Limerick, Professor of History of the American West at the University of Colorado-Boulder, for a thought-provoking discussion on what it means to be “from the West.” We’ll explore the history of identity in the American West, including the forces that have shaped the myth and reality of western identity and ways that individuals defy and challenge the identities we construct. This event includes dinner.
Event #3: Identity Through Art
Tuesday, April 8 at 5:30 pm
Join artist Charlene “Tillie” Moody (Warm Springs) as she unveils her new art installation centered around identity and representation. Created for this High Desert Project series, Tillie will share the inspiration behind her work. This event includes dinner.
Event #2: The Life and Portraits of Frank S. Matsura
Monday, March 31 at 5:30 pm
Explore the life and work of Japanese-born photographer Frank Matsura through an exclusive tour of a new exhibition at the Museum with Professor Michael Holloman (Colville Confederated Tribes), co-curator of the exhibition. Taken in the early 1900s, Matsura’s photographs reflect his playful personality and close relationship with Native communities. From wooly chaps to traditional beaded bags, these images provide nuanced insights into how individuals chose to represent their identity. This event includes dinner.
