Free Field Trip Program
High Desert Museum is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities for students across Central Oregon and beyond. To support this effort, the Museum offers a limited number of free field trips to ensure the greatest amount of access to our self-guided and Discovery Class field trips.
The Free Field Trip Program covers the entire cost of admission for students, chaperones and teachers as well as the cost of transportation (based on the cost estimate provided in a school’s application).
While we have limited funding for our Free Field Trip Program, the Museum offers field trips based on a sliding scale all year long. Learn more on our website about our regular field trip program here.
Who can apply for the Free Field Trip Program?
– Teachers interested in bringing their students to High Desert Museum in January, February and early March 2025.
– Teachers at schools designated by Oregon Department of Education’s Community Eligibility Provision guidelines as 25% Community Eligibility Provisions or greater. Not sure? Check out this website here.
– Teachers at schools located in a more rural area where access to programs and services may be limited.
– Teachers at schools who have not had opportunities to work with external partners as frequently as other schools in the tri-county area.
– Teachers planning to incorporate content from the field trip visit into their classroom learning.
It’s your opportunity to apply!
Submit applications by 11:59 pm on January 1, 2025 to be considered. Applications will be reviewed and accepted teachers will be notified by January 9, 2025. If you were not selected, you will be notified by January 17, 2025.
Selected applicants will have until January 15, 2025 to confirm their acceptance and schedule their field trip. This will include having their administrator review and sign the Free Field Trip Program agreement.

How will you select from the applicants?
– Our Education and Engagement Team will select from the applicants based on a rubric prioritizing schools that are most distant from resources and have demonstrated the most need through Oregon Department of Education measures.
– The rubric also includes calculations to ensure the highest number of students are served with the amount allocated to the fund.
