Natural History Pub: Measuring Snow for Water Resources

  •  03.06.23
     7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

In the western U.S., runoff from snowmelt accounts for nearly 50-70% of the region’s water resources. In 1935, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) established a formal, cooperative Snow Survey to conduct snow surveys and develop reliable water forecasts for the western U.S. The Snow Survey serves a critical role in collecting hydroclimatic data that provide information critical to water management, drought monitoring, agriculture, dam operations, recreation and more. Today, the program monitors over 900 automated stations and manually measures over 1,000 snow courses.

Please join Matt Warbritton, lead hydrologist of the NRCS Oregon Snow Survey, to learn how and why the program monitors mountain snowpack.
