Natural History Pub: With Fire, Comes Smoke: Living in a Fire-Dependent Ecosystem
Fire plays an integral role in Central Oregon’s ecosystem. Some of the things we love most about our landscape, like towering Ponderosa pines, require frequent low-intensity fire to sustain. Fire practitioners implement prescribed burns in the spring and fall to mimic historic fire return intervals while wildfires often dot the landscape during summer months. With fire, comes smoke. At this Natural History Pub, hear from Jeff Crawford, Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District Fuels Planner, and Robert Newey, Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District Fire Management Officer, to learn more about the ways in which smoke is one component of the dynamic role that fire plays within our ecosystem.
