The North American porcupine has a long history of persecution in the Pacific Northwest. An unprotected mammal, they have been disappearing from the landscape- and people are starting to notice. In response to population declines, biologists in Central Oregon have launched a pilot study employing trail cameras, GPS collars, and community volunteers to better understand the species in the region.
Join Mikayla Bivona, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife District Wildlife Technician and project lead, for Pest to Prize: Why Are Biologists Searching for Porcupines in the Deschutes Watershed, and learn why this species matters, what we still don’t know, and how this research could shape porcupines’ future in the Deschutes watershed.
