High Desert Project

We all want a bright future for our community, but what does that really look like, especially when people have different views about how to achieve it? The High Desert Project creates a space for people to share their beliefs, perspectives and experiences on issues that matter for the future of our region. We lean into the discomfort that comes from not always reaching a consensus. Rather, the goal of these conversations is to learn by listening and build a deeper respect for different perspectives.

We currently host 4 series every year. The goal of the High Desert Project is to bring together a diverse group of participants. We strive to select individuals with a variety of experiences, backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives. Check here to apply to be a part of our upcoming cohorts.

Each High Desert Project event series is centered on a topic related to the High Desert region. During the events, a range of community members and experts, such as artists, ranchers, scientists, Native knowledge holders, and historians, facilitate meaningful shared experiences that connect participants to the topic through different perspectives. These experiences can range from field trips and art installations to workshops and discussions. Through these experiences, participants engage in dialogue in which they offer their own perspectives on the topic and hear from other cohort members.

Established in 2020 through the efforts of a Steering Committee, we have an ambitious 75-year vision for the High Desert Project. This vision is that in 75 years everyone in the High Desert region will be touched by this initiative and as a result we will have a more connected and empowered High Desert community.

At the heart of this vision is the recognition that the goals of the High Desert Project require time and intention. By catalyzing an ever-growing High Desert Project alumni cohort, we will expand the impact of this initiative and inspire and connect our High Desert community long into the future.
